Cloud Forest Reserve Santa Elena
The Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve, situated 7 km northwest of Santa Elena town and is an exceptional hiking experience. The Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve is a wonderland of green lushness. Giant tree ferns, bamboo and palm trees grow abundantly in the under story while thick, moss covered liana vines dangle from the canopy. Conservation of the unique biodiversity of Santa Elena is of primary importance. Use all your senses to enjoy the frequent sightings of birds and mammals, to hear the song of the Quetzal and the roaring of the Howler monkey and to identify the tracks of the shy Puma, Coati and Red brocket deer.
Services and attractions
Proceeds from entrance fees, guided tours and the souvenir shop are either reinvested in the management of the Reserve or are channelled to local schools to help fund education. Donations gladly accepted.
Looking northeast on clear days, you can see the spectacular view of the Arenal Volcano and lake with the same name. In 1968 Arenal began a phase of intense erruptions which is still continuing today.

The Reserve is closely linked to the schools in Santa Elena and profits are invested into the development of courses in evironmental education, biology, languages and tourism. School children and volunteers play a vital role in the maintenance and development of the Reserve.Conservation of the unique biodiversity of Santa Elena is of primary importance.
