Province of Alajuela

The Alajuela Province

On the total area of the province of Alajuela of approximately 9'752 km2 live 18% of the population of Costa Rica. Some of the famous tourist destinations are the volcanoes Poas and Arenal and the nature reserve Caño Negro and in Sarchi arts and crafts are produced for many years.

Alajuela

The capital of the province known as "the city of mangos", because in the near and further afield many mango trees were thriving 1834-1835 the capital of Costa Rica. Being close to San Jose SJO (Juan Santamaria) International Airport Alajuela is an ideal location for arrival and departure. The surrounding area of Alajuela has still much more: for example, the zoo in La Garita, Poas Volcano and coffee plantations.

San Ramón

San Ramón is an economically strategic hub between San Jose, Alajuela, Guanacaste, Puntarenas and San Carlos and the most important city just outside the agglomeration of the Central Valley.

Grecia

Grecia, 20 kilometers northeast of Alajuela was known by the church of Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes which was completely composed of prefabricated metal parts. Grecia - embedded in a fantastic landscape is an idyllic area.

San Mateo

Probably only few know in San Mateo the Parque Natural de la Cultura Agropecuaria PANACA with many interesting theme parks for the whole family.

Atenas

First of all, Atenas is known by its healthy climate but also by any other attractions for example the impressive 40 meter waterfall of Río Cajón just 5 kilometers away from the center of Atenas.

Naranjo

When the first settlers in this area discovered some orange groves (Naranjales), he gave the place the name Naranjo (Orange). The Naranjeños are proud of the ruins of Cristo Rey, a historical monument with one of the most beautiful views over the Central Valley.

Palmares

Palmares got its name from the large number of palm trees that are in the valley. However, if you are more interested have a party on palms, you should visit the Fiestas de Palmares Cívicas that take place every year in January.

Poás, San Pedro

The Poas Volcano is one of the five active volcanoes in Costa Rica and one of the main attractions at any Costa Rica travel. In San Pedro de Poas many strawberries and blackberries are grown and are often sold on the roadside by the farmers.

Orotina

Orotina is the gateway to the Pacific Ocean and the city of fruits! Many residents of San Jose have here a Quinta with fruit trees and spend your free time on the weekend in the region.

San Carlos, Ciudad Quesada

The Ticos say that in 13 months of the year rains in San Carlos, this is certainly one reason why this area is so fertile. The main attraction is undoubtedly the active Arenal Volcano.

La Fortuna (Vulkan Arenal)

La Fortuna and the surrounding area with the active Arenal Volcano is one of the highlights of a trip to Costa Rica! La Fortuna has even more to offer: Cerro Chato, Arenal Oasis, hot springs hanging bridges, waterfalls, off-road, canopy, horseback riding, hiking etc.

Alfaro Ruiz, Zarcero

The artfully cut shrubs in the city park Francisco Alvarado before the Church in Zarcero are worth a visit! In the cool mountain climate to flourish especially organically grown produce and the cheese of Zarcero is in all of Costa Rica a term.

Valverde Vega, Sarchí

Since 1903, the famous oxcart and traditional souvenirs are made in Sarchi.Today, almost the entire village lives from the production of accessories, souvenirs and furniture. But also some other attractions such as the Botanical Garden Else Kientzler worth visiting.

Upala

Upala is the center for livestock and rice cultivation in the region, the most famous tourist attraction is the nature reserve Caño Negro - The paradise for bird lovers!.

Los Chiles

Los Chiles is only 4 kilometers away from Nicaragua, the region is very popular for sports fishermens. From here, there are guided tours in the nature reserve Caño Negro. Adventurous pass over the Rio Frio to San Carlos to Nicaragua or pass the new bridge over the Rio San Juan and from there take a boat to the enchanting the Solentiname Islands. The bridge over the Rio San Juan to San Carlos in Nicaragua has now been opened and occupied the border control in Tablilla.

Guatuso

Check the National Park Tenorio with the impressive waterfall of the Rio Celeste. Experience in Buenavista the real Costa Rica and visit the Indian Reserve of Maleku in Guatuso.
