Costa Rican Holidays

Costa Rica is a country which is predominantly Catholic faith. From this basic the religious festivals are celebrated with great anticipation. Each place and each region has its own saint patron. Many festivities take place from December to February, at this time there are school holidays throughout the country.

  • March 30th - April 5th Semana Santa (Easter Week)
  • April 11th - Dia de Juan Santamaria (Anniversary of National Hero)
  • May 1st - Dia del Trabajo (Labor Day)
  • May 29th - Dia Corpus Christi (Corpus Christi Day)
  • June 29th - San Pedro y San Pablo
  • July 25th - Anexión de Guanacaste (Annexation of Guanacaste)
  • August 2nd - Dia de la Virgen de los Angeles (Saint patron  of Costa Rica)
  • August 15th - Dia de la Madre (Mother's Day)
  • September 15th - Dia de Independencia de Costa Rica (Independence Day)
  • October 12th - Dia de la Cultura (Discovery of America)
  • November 2nd - Dia de los Santos difuntos (All Souls Day)
  • December 8th - Inmaculada Concepción de la Virgen (Immaculate Conception of the Virgin)
  • December 25th - Navidad (Christmas)
  • January 1st - Año Nuevo (New Year)


During Easter Week and between Christmas and New Year, many shops are closed and bus schedules are limited or not available.
