Currency in Costa Rica

The currency of Costa Rica was in honor of Christopher Columbus (Cristobal Colon = Colones). The currency symbol is the "C" and a bar"?" and the official abbreviation "CRC". Small monetary units are 5, 10, 20, 25, 50, 100 and 500 colones.

The Time Magazine from the United States has selected the 20,000 Colon bill as one of the most beautiful in the world.

Currency in Costa Rica

Since march 2010 was launched the new bills and will fully replace the current until January 2011. The new bills (see above) are issued in currency units of 1.000, 2.000, 5.000, 10.000, 20.000 and 50.000 colones and have more safety features, new designs, colors and sizes and also offer enhancements for the visually impaired.

A beautiful souvenir of Costa Rica are 5 colones notes of earlier times. You can buy this in many outlets and souvenir shops.
